Potassium chloride (KCl) is a versatile inorganic salt primarily used in agriculture as a high-potassium fertilizer known as muriate of potash (MOP). Beyond farming, it serves as a critical sodium substitute in the food industry, an essential medication for treating potassium deficiency, and a key chemical feedstock for various industrial processes.

Primary Commercial Applications
Agriculture (Fertilizer): Approximately 90% of global production is used in the fertilizer industry. As MOP, it provides essential potassium that enhances root strength, disease resistance, and crop yields for staples like corn, wheat, and soybeans.
Food Industry: Known as additive E508, it is a leading low-sodium alternative to table salt (NaCl). It is used in processed meats, snacks, and sports drinks to reduce sodium intake while maintaining flavor and shelf life.
Medical & Healthcare: It is used to treat hypokalemia (low blood potassium) and is included on the World Health Organization’s List of Essential Medicines. It also appears in oral rehydration solutions and as an electrolyte in IV fluids.
Oil & Gas Industry: KCl is a key component in drilling fluids (muds). It helps stabilize boreholes and prevents clay swelling during drilling and hydraulic fracturing operations.
Chemical Manufacturing: It acts as a primary feedstock for producing potassium hydroxide (KOH) and potassium metal, which are subsequently used in soaps, detergents, and alkaline batteries.
Water Treatment: It serves as an environmentally friendly alternative to sodium chloride in household water softeners to regenerate ion-exchange resins without adding sodium to wastewater.

Industrial Processes:
Metalworking: Used as a flux in the gas welding of aluminium and in electroplating to achieve higher voltages.
Construction: Added to concrete to accelerate hardening at low temperatures.
Fire Safety: Historically used in dry chemical fire extinguishers (Super-K).
De-icing: Used in specialty de-icing products that are safer for pets and plants than traditional rock salt.
